This subject will provide the opportunity to carry out independent legal research and to develop research and writing skills on a topic and pursuant to a proposal which have been approved as a single-semester program. The topic may be one which does not fall within the scope of coursework subjects offered during the year, or, where the topic is dealt with in such a subject, the mode of assessment in that subject may not provide the opportunity to research and write a significant paper.The subject will normally proceed in accordance with established guidelines (obtainable on request) in the following stages: (1) choice of topic and formulation of research program in consultation with member of the faculty; (2) approval of proposal and appointment of supervisor by Graduate Studies Committee (3) research and writing carried out over one semester under supervision; and (4) submission and examination of a paper normally of 10,000 and not exceeding 12,000 words in length. The subject will be available in any semester in respect of which appropriate staff are available for the formulation, supervision and examination tasks. A candidate will not normally be permitted to take this subject until at least two other subjects have been completed in the postgraduate program.
