In Australia, public sector employment has, in recent years, undergone major changes. This subject is designed to acquaint students with these major alterations in the fields of both labour relations law and public law. The subject is concerned with the law governing the employment of public servants and of other persons in the employ of Government agencies. The principal matters dealt with are (a) the common law of Crown employment; (b) structure and management of Government services; (c) appointment of officers, public servants and other governmental employees; (d) classifications, transfers and promotions; (e) remuneration and salaries; (f) leave and other benefits; (g) grievance machinery, FOI legislation, appeal procedures and the Ombudsman; (h) tenure of office, dismissal, redundancies, redeployments and retirement; (i) rights and obligations of governmental employees; (j) offences in relation to offices; (k) discipline, disciplinary procedures, offences and industrial action ; and (l) the impact of the Industrial Relations Reform Act 1993 (Cth) and State unfair dismissal statutory remedies.
