This subject is designed to give an understanding of the history, organisation, education, functions and regulation of the legal profession generally, and in Victoria in particular. Consideration will also be given to different types and styles of legal practice and the obligations and rewards of professional life. The subject will examine the purpose and content of rules of legal ethics and professional conduct, the maintenance of professional standards, the handling of trust monies, and lawyers' relationships with their clients, the courts and other persons. Further themes include the significance of being a profession, the role of the lawyer in such contexts as dispute resolution, public access to the legal system and the marketing of legal services. The subject meets the requirements for admission to practise in Victoria laid down by the Council of Legal Education in relation to `professional conduct.'
