Professional practice (summer) 515S
Associate Professor G Powles
15 points * Summer semester * Clayton
The subject is taught continuously in three consecutive courses, beginning in March, July and November respectively, and the student may enrol for any one of them. Provisional enrolment is invited six months or so before the subject begins, and each course is preceded by a short introductory program. The subject involves attendance at the Legal Service (a regular day or evening session per week of usually four hours, plus follow-up and discussion) and, during term-time, a weekly seminar of two hours and a tutorial of one hour. The subject will acquaint students with aspects of the practical and professional environment in which their legal knowledge will be applied. The subject is designed to provide opportunities for the critical analysis of legal principles and skills, and of the processes by which they are applied, in the context of a legal service which endeavours to meet the needs of the community. The subject offers a social dimension to academic training by creating an opportunity for the student, while reviewing law already learnt, to assess the adequacy of law and legal processes in context.
Assessment
Legal service work: 80% * Assignment/tutorial presentation: 20%
