This subject is concerned with the rights resulting from intellectual activity in the industrial and scientific fields. This involves a detailed study of the provisions of the Patents Act 1990 (Cth) including the grant of patents and the maintenance and working of patents. Other statutory forms of protection, such as the Plant Variety Rights Act 1987, may also be considered, and the international arrangements for acquiring protection for inventions and other technical innovations will be discussed. The protection given to confidential information and know-how will also be covered.
Assessment
Final examination (3 hours plus 30 minutes for reading): 100% * or research assignment (3000 words): 30% and final examination (two hours plus 30 minutes reading): 70%
