Mr M Davison

15 points * 3 hours of lectures per week * First semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: See section 3 of the faculty resolutions

This subject deals with the law relating to copyright and design protection, many aspects of which are particularly relevant to the entertainment and media and computer industries. Copyright is concerned with the protection given to literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, and to sound recordings, films, television and radio broadcasts and published editions of works. Designs law gives protection to the work of the industrial designer in the development of designs for manufactured products. Among the topics to be addressed are justifications for protection, material in which copyright can subsist, duration of protection, infringement, ownership, defences, compulsory licensing, remedies, international copyright, and the copyright-design overlap. Particular attention will be given to the application of copyright and designs protection to new technologies.
