The object of this subject is to provide students with a basic knowledge and understanding of the development and practice of international organisation in the modern world. The roles, structure, functions and practice of intergovernmental and transnational organisations at the regional and global levels will be examined. The subject will deal inter alia with the League of Nations and the United Nations, and regional organisations such as the European Communities, the Organisation of American States, the Organisation of African Unity, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and the South Pacific Forum. Certain functional bodies, including specialised agencies of the United Nations and the Red Cross, will also be examined. Attention will also be given to the role of the International Court of Justice. Many of the vital international legal, political and economic issues of the day involve international institutions and their relations with national authorities. The subject will examine how these issues are handled by international organisations and the processes designed for their resolution.
