0 points * Three 1-hour lectures per week and one 1-hour tutorial per fortnight * Full-year subject * Clayton

This subject provides an introduction to the main principles of criminal law, to the law relating to certain crimes, and to the workings of the system of criminal justice in the courts. The subject begins with an investigation of the nature and purposes of the criminal law. Certain aspects of criminal procedure will then be intensively examined. The crimes of homicide, other offences against the person, and theft (and certain of the crimes analogous to theft) are examined in depth. Some other crimes are treated in less detail. Some of the doctrines applicable to all crimes, for example the general defences to a criminal charge, the law of conspiracy and attempt, and the requisite mental element of a crime, are examined.
