Ove Arup and Partners Prize in Civil Engineering

A prize of $400 donated by Ove Arup and Partners Pty Ltd to commemorate the firm's founder, Sir Ove Arup, awarded annually on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Civil Engineering to the top graduate in the department.

Australian Institute of Steel Construction Prize for Steel Structures

In 1991 the Australian Institute of Steel Construction established an annual prize of $200 to be awarded on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Civil Engineering to the third-year candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Engineering in civil engineering who demonstrates the greatest proficiency in the field of steel structures, provided that the candidate's work is of sufficient merit.

Graham Beard Prize

A prize of $1000 for overall proficiency in the electrical and computer systems engineering course will be awarded annually to a student who has completed level four of the electrical and computer systems engineering course and who is selected by the committee as worthy of the prize.

Graham Beard Third-Year Prize

A prize of $350 for proficiency in electronics will be awarded annually to a student who has completed level three of the electrical and computer systems engineering course and who is selected by the committee as worthy of the prize.

BHP Prize

A prize of $200 donated by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd will be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Materials engineering, to the level-two student showing greatest proficiency in that course.

BHP First-Year Engineering Prize

A prize of $200 donated by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the dean to the student who at the end of the level-one engineering course shows the greatest proficiency as determined by weighted average marks at the annual examinations in first year.

Melbourne Water Prize for Water Engineering

The Southern Region of Melbourne Water has donated a prize of $500 to be awarded annually to the student in civil engineering who in any year gains the highest aggregate marks in the level-three subjects hydraulics, public health engineering and hydrology. The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Civil Engineering, and is awarded only if there is a student of sufficient merit. The prize may be shared.

BTR Nylex Limited Prize for Materials Engineering

A prize of $200 donated by BTR Nylex Limited will be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Materials Engineering, to the level-three student showing greatest proficiency in that course.

BTR Nylex Limited Vacation Report Prize

A prize of $50 donated by BTR Nylex Limited will be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Materials Engineering, to the student in that department who has passed the level-two annual examinations, and who is judged to have submitted the best vacation work report at the end of the level-two long vacation.

Coffey Partners International Prize in Geotechnical Engineering

A prize of $100 donated by Coffey and Partners Pty Ltd awarded annually on the recommendation of the staff of the geomechanics group in the Department of Civil Engineering to the student in the department who has shown the greatest proficiency in geotechnical engineering in level four of the course.

Department of Civil Engineering Vacation Work Prize

A prize of $100 will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Civil Engineering to the student who submits the best report on vacation work experience.

Digital Equipment Prize for Computer Engineering Project

In 1984 the university accepted an offer from Digital Equipment Australia Pty Ltd to establish a prize of the value of $300 to be awarded annually to the level-four student in electrical and computer systems engineering who displays the greatest proficiency in a project in digital electronics or computer engineering. The award shall be made on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering and will only be made if it is considered that the student is of sufficient merit.

J W Dodds Memorial Prize

A prize of $1000 and a medal donated by Dodds Consolidated Industries Ltd is awarded annually to a student who, on completion of the final year of the course in mechanical engineering, is considered to be the most outstanding, having demonstrated academic excellence throughout the course and having provided some indication of outstanding professional promise. For any year no prize, a shared prize, or two separate prizes may be awarded.

The ESI Sir Willis Connolly Prize

A prize of $500 donated by the Electricity Supply Industry of Victoria will be awarded annually for outstanding performance at level four of the course on the Clayton campus to the student specialising in electrical power, including the level-four project, experimental work and work experience, who has shown the greatest proficiency during level four of the course, and displays initiative and leadership potential. The recipient must have passed the whole of each year's work at the first attempt. The prize will be awarded on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, the incumbent of the Sir John Monash Chair of Electrical Power Engineering and an ESI nominee, and will only be awarded if there is a student of sufficient merit.

The ESI Faraday Prize

The prize of $500 donated by the Electricity Supply Industry of Victoria will be awarded annually for outstanding performance at level two of the course on the Clayton campus to the student who has shown the greatest proficiency in power-related topics at level two and who shows a broad overall competence in engineering. The recipient must have passed the whole of each year's work at the first attempt. The prize will be awarded on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, the incumbent of the Sir John Monash Chair of Electrical Power Engineering and an ESI nominee, and will only be awarded if there is a student of sufficient merit.

The ESI Project Prize

A prize of $250 donated by the Electricity Supply Industry of Victoria will be awarded annually to a student in the course on the Clayton campus for the most innovative level-four project on a power-related topic. The recipient must have passed the whole of each year's work at the first attempt. The prize will be awarded on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, the incumbent of the Sir John Monash Chair of Electrical Power Engineering and an SECV nominee, and will only be awarded if there is a student of sufficient merit.

The ESI Report Prize

A prize of $250 donated by the Electricity Supply Industry of Victoria will be awarded annually for the best vacation work report by a power student for the vacation at the end of level three of the course on the Clayton campus. The recipient must have passed the whole of each year's work at the first attempt. The prize will be awarded on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, the incumbent of the Sir John Monash Chair of Electrical Power Engineering and an ESI nominee, and will only be awarded if there is a student of sufficient merit.

Ford Prize

The Ford Motor Company of Australia Ltd has donated two annual prizes, each of $200, to be awarded to a level-three student of mechanical engineering, one for proficiency in solid mechanics, the other for proficiency in studies related to the manufacturing industry as may be recommended to the head of the department by the respective responsible professors.

Foundation Industry Prize for Soil Engineering

A prize of $500 donated by John Wagstaff Constructions Pty Ltd and Frankipile Australia Ltd will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the staff in the geomechanics group in the Department of Civil Engineering to the best foundation design team in the subject CIV4244 (Soil engineering).

The Golder Associates Prize in Geotechnical Design

In 1990 the university accepted an offer from Golder Associates to establish a prize, valued at $500, to be awarded annually to the student or students who have shown the greatest proficiency in geotechnical design in level four of the course in civil engineering. The award shall be made on the recommendation of the staff of the geomechanics group of the Department of Civil Engineering.

Fred Green Memorial Prize in Civil Engineering

A prize of $200 donated by the Institution of Civil Engineers, to be known as the Fred Green Memorial Prize in Civil Engineering, awarded annually on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Civil Engineering to the student in the department who has shown the greatest proficiency in civil engineering (completing all core subjects) to the end of level three.

Gutteridge Haskins and Davey Prize in Water Engineering

A prize of $100 donated by Gutteridge Haskins and Davey Pty Ltd will be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Civil Engineering, to the student in that department who has shown the greatest proficiency in water engineering subjects in level four of the course.

The Professor K H Hunt Award

A prize of $2500 and a medallion bearing the image of Professor K H Hunt will be awarded annually to the student from the Faculty of Engineering who submits the best PhD thesis in the calendar year preceding the award. The prize will be awarded annually on the day in which the main Engineering autumn graduation ceremony is held. Eligible candidates will be those PhD students frm the Faculty of Engineering who will be receiving their degrees at the graduation ceremony or who have been awarded the degree in the calendar year subsequent to the previous award. All such candidates are eligible and applications for the award are unnecessary. The selection committee will be the Engineering Research Committee and selection will be based on the examiners' reports on those theses which have been accepted for the award of a PhD degree.

The IEE Prize

The Institution of Electrical Engineers (London) annually awards prizes for outstanding academic achievement to students who are participating in a course of study accredited by the institution, and in 1989 invited Monash University to become party to these awards. The IEE prize, which consists of a certificate and a cheque for #75, will be awarded on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering to an outstanding student in level three of the course in electrical and computer systems engineering, which has been mutually accredited by the Institution of Engineers, Australia, and the Institution of Electrical Engineers (London). The award will be made only if there is a student of sufficient merit.

The Institute of Metals and Materials Australasia Prize

Awarded annually by the Institute of Metals and Materials Australasia to a student enrolled at a Victorian university or college of advanced education who submits the best report on his or her final-year project, which must be within the field of materials science or engineering. The prize is valued at $250, plus an inscribed medallion and one year's free membership of the institute. Candidates for the prize should submit their reports to the Secretary, Victorian Branch, Institute of Metals and Materials Australasia via the head of the Department of Materials Engineering after their reports have been assessed.

The Institute of Metals and Materials Australasia Student Award

Awarded annually by the Institute of Metals and Materials Australasia to one student from each of the applicable Victorian tertiary education institutions, as recommended by the head of the department concerned, for demonstrated excellence in a particular unit at any level in the appropriate course. The award is valued at $200 plus one year's free membership of the institute.

The Institution of Engineers, Australia Award

An award of $200 and the Ian Langlands Medal are given annually by the Institution of Engineers, Australia, to a student who, on completion of the final year of the Bachelor of Engineering degree course, is considered to be the most outstanding from all engineering departments. Criteria on which the award is based include academic record, personal qualities, and interest and involvement in professional and other activities.

The Institution of Engineers, Australia Book Prize

In 1988 the Structural branch committee of the Institute of Engineers, Australia decided to offer a book prize to be awarded annually to a civil engineering student who in the final year of study has achieved distinction in some aspect of study associated with structural engineering. The book prize shall be awarded on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Civil Engineering.

Alan G Jones Medal

The Australian Southern Section of the Institution of Production Engineers offered in 1982 to present annually, as an encouragement of manufacturing matters, a medal for outstanding performance by a student in studies directly related to production engineering. The medal is to mark the contribution of A G Jones, MBE, CEng, FIProdE, FMechE, FIEAust to the practice of production engineering. The medal is awarded upon the recommendation of the head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Monash University, in consultation with that senior member of staff responsible for the studies in question, to a final year student, if of sufficient merit, of mechanical engineering at Monash University. The medallist will have shown outstanding performance in studies in some or all of production science, production engineering, automation, and innovation (or such corresponding topics from time to time forming part of the final-year curriculum), or a like proficiency in the final-year project provided that it relates closely to production engineering; or a combination of both. The medal is to be presented at a regularly scheduled meeting of the Institution of Production Engineers by the head of its Southern Section.

McGraw-Hill Book Prize in Chemical Engineering

In 1986 McGraw-Hill Book Company Australia Pty Ltd agreed to establish an annual book prize to be awarded to the chemical engineering student who obtains the highest composite mark in the subjects CHE1110 (Analysis of chemical processing systems) and CHE1120 (Industrial chemistry) in level one. The prize, a copy of Perry's Chemical engineers' handbook, shall be awarded on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Chemical Engineering.

The MBPMA Prize in Cold-Formed Steel Structures

In 1989 the Metal Building Products Manufacturers Association donated a prize of $200 to be awarded annually to the student who has performed best in an area of study associated with cold-formed steel structures. The prize shall be awarded on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Civil Engineering to the student with the best steel design in the subject CIV3225 (Steel structures), which demonstrates mastery of cold-formed steel elements.

Reuben Medding Prize

Mr R Medding, of Pacificnet Services Pty Ltd has donated an annual prize of $100 for outstanding work in control engineering with effect from 1972. The prize is open to all electrical and computer systems engineering students undertaking studies in control engineering in their final undergraduate year. The award is made by the faculty board on the recommendation of a committee consisting of the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, an academic staff member in the control field, and Mr R Medding or nominee, who base their decision on examination results, experimental work and project work in control engineering and/or telecommunications. No award shall be made in any one year if, in the opinion of the committee, there is no candidate of sufficient merit.

National Consolidated Limited Vacation Report Prize

A prize of $75 donated by National Consolidated Limited will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Materials Engineering to the student in that department who has passed the level-three annual examinations and who is judged to have submitted the best vacation work report at the end of the level-three long vacation.

Philips Prize in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering

The Philips Prize in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering for undergraduate work in the field of electrical and computer systems engineering is valued at $250. The prize is made available by Philips Industries Holdings Ltd and is awarded to the final-year electrical and computer systems engineering student showing the greatest proficiency in topics particularly related to the electronics field, on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering. The award will be made only if there is a student of sufficient merit. A student repeating final year shall not be eligible for this prize.

The I J Polmear Award

Awarded annually by the Institute of Metals and Materials Australasia to one student enrolled in each recognised degree or diploma-level course in materials/metallurgy at a Victorian tertiary institution. The award, valued at $250 plus one year's free membership of the institute, is for the student who shows the best educational promise in the first effective year of each course.

PWT Asia/Pacific Pty Ltd Prize

The prize of $350 donated by PWT Asia/Pacific Pty Ltd will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Chemical Engineering to the level-four student in the chemical engineering course who shows the greatest proficiency in subjects concerned with water and wastewater treatment, provided that the student is of sufficient merit.

The Owen Potter Award for Chemical Engineering Excellence

In 1991 the Department of Chemical Engineering instituted this award in recognition of the contribution made by its foundation professor, O E Potter, not only to the department but to the chemical engineering profession in Australia generally. The award, a medallion, will be presented annually to the first class honours graduate who gains highest overall marks in the course. In any year a shared prize or, in the event of there being no first class honours graduates, no prize may be awarded.

Prok International Prize

A prize of $250 has been donated by Prok International Limited to be awarded annually to a final-year mechanical engineering student for the best vacation work report on completion of the third-year long vacation, provided that the report is of sufficient merit and provided that the student concerned has passed the third-year annual examinations.

Richardson Prize in Transport Engineering

A prize of $100 donated by Dr A J Richardson awarded annually on the recommendation of the staff of the transport group in the Department of Civil Engineering to the student in the department who has shown the greatest proficiency in transport engineering.

Scott and Furphy Prize in Highway Design

A prize of $250 donated by Scott and Furphy Engineers Pty Ltd will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Civil Engineering, to the student in that department who is judged to have submitted the best highway design.

Shell Prize for Chemical Engineering

A prize of $100 donated by the Shell group of companies in Australia will be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, to the level-two student intending to take the degree in chemical engineering who shows the greatest proficiency at the annual examinations, provided the student is of sufficient merit.

Simon Abbey Pty Ltd Award

This prize of $250 is available to level-four students, if deserving, of the Department of Mechanical Engineering for demonstration of skills in industrial innovation as shown in any or a combination of performances in corresponding final-year project work, engineering practices and design courses, or other closely relevant coursework. It is awarded by the head of the department upon the recommendation of the professor chiefly responsible for such studies.

Sly and Weigall Prize in Engineering Law

The law firm, Sly and Weigall, donated a prize for 1990, valued at $500, to be awarded to the level-four civil engineering student who in the subject CIV4202 (Management practices) submits the best essay on a topic to be nominated by Sly and Weigall within the field of engineering law. The essays will be judged by Sly and Weigall, and the prize will be awarded only if the best essay is judged to be of sufficient merit. The prize may be awarded annually.

Neville Smith Timber Industries Prize in Timber Engineering

A prize of $300 donated by Neville Smith Timber Industries Pty Ltd will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Civil Engineering to the undergraduate student who shows the greatest proficiency in the field of timber structures at the Clayton campus.

Society of Chemical Industry of Victoria Prize

In 1989 the Society of Chemical Industry of Victoria, a technical society of long standing which provides a variety of activities for people connected with, or interested in, any aspect of the chemical industry, donated a prize of $100 to be awarded for excellence in a major course component which is clearly connected with the practice or application of chemistry in industry. The prize is awarded in odd-numbered years on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Chemical Engineering to the top student in the subjects CHE3071.12 and CHE3082.12 (Chemical engineering science), and in even-numbered years on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Chemistry to the top student in one of the pairs of subjects CHM3011.24 and CHM3022.24 (Chemistry) or CHM3031.12 and CHM3042.12 (Chemistry). The prize may be shared.

The H Vivian Taylor Memorial Award in Acoustics

A prize of $150 and a certificate has been donated by the Australian Acoustical Society to be awarded annually to the mechanical engineering student who achieves the best performance in the subject MEC4430 (Industrial noise and its control). The award will be made on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Telecom Prize for Materials in Telecommunications and Optical Technology

In 1986 Telecom Australia agreed to establish a prize, valued at $250, to be awarded annually to the student who achieves the highest result in the unit `Materials in telecommunications and optical technology' of the subject MAT4510 (Elective topics in materials engineering). The award shall be made on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Materials Engineering.

Tubemakers of Australia, Water, Oil and Gas Industries Division Prize

In 1985 Tubemakers of Australia agreed to establish a prize, valued at $300, to be awarded annually to the student who displays the greatest proficiency in level four of the course in materials engineering. The award shall be made on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Materials Engineering and will only be made if it is considered that the student is of sufficient merit.

Unisys Prize for Fourth-Year Computer Systems Engineering

In 1983 Burroughs Limited agreed to establish a prize, valued at $300, to be awarded annually to the student who displays the greatest proficiency in the computer engineering and computer systems engineering subjects of level four of the course in electrical and computer systems engineering. The award shall be made on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering and will only be made if it is considered that the student is of sufficient merit.

Vicroads/Prize in Transport Engineering

A prize of $300 donated by Vicroads will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Civil Engineering to the student enrolled for MEngSc by coursework and minor thesis in traffic and transport engineering who has the highest average mark in coursework units, from among those students who complete their coursework requirements in the year.

Western Mining Corporation Prizes

Two prizes of $150 donated by the Western Mining Corporation Limited will be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, for proficiency in subjects in the final two levels of the undergraduate degree course in chemical engineering. Of these prizes one will be awarded to the level-three student who shows greatest proficiency in process operations and design, and the other will be awarded to the level-four student who shows greatest proficiency in subjects concerned with mineral processing and extractive metallurgy, provided that the students are of sufficient merit.

The Wilson Transformer Company Prize

The Wilson Electric Transformer Company agreed in 1969 to establish an annual prize initially for a period of five years from 1970. This period has since been extended. The prize of $500 is awarded on the recommendation of a committee consisting of the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, a member of the academic staff of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering who specialises in electrical power and the chief engineer of the Wilson Transformer Company. The award will be made to the final-year student in electrical and computer systems engineering, if of sufficient merit, whose final-year project is on a power topic and who, in the opinion of the committee, has shown the greatest proficiency throughout the course, and has also displayed engineering ability and creative ability.

The Jack Wilson Prize

Mr Jack Wilson of the Wilson Electric Transformer Company agreed in 1969 to establish an annual prize initially for a period of five years, from 1970. This period has since been extended. The prize of $500 is awarded on the recommendation of a committee consisting of the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, a member of the academic staff of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering who specialises in electrical power, and Mr Robert Wilson or his nominee, to the level-three student in electrical and computer systems engineering, if of sufficient merit, who shows the greatest proficiency and initiative in electrical power engineering.
