Examinations

Terminal examinations in most subjects are held during the university examination period at the end of each semester. There are no supplementary examinations at Clayton save that where a student has fail results in the current or the immediately previous semester in a subject or subjects worth not more than eight credit points, and a passing grade in the subject(s) would complete all academic requirements for the degree, a department may award supplementary examinations in the subject(s) in such form and at such time as seems appropriate.

At Caulfield and Gippsland, students may be granted permission by the board of examiners to undertake supplementary assessment in a subject which has not been satisfactorily completed. In the event of a failure in one or more subjects students re-enrol in those subjects when next they are offered.

At Caulfield, to be eligible for supplementary assessment a student must have (a) passed 50 per cent or more credit points in which he/she is currently enrolled; (b) attained a mark in the subjects(s) under consideration of 40 per cent or greater for a level 1 subject if the student is only enrolled in level 1 subjects or 45 per cent or greater for subjects at other levels plus level 1 subjects which are taken together with subjects at other levels.

The maximum number of subjects for which supplementary assessment may be approved is two (2). Under exceptional circumstances the head of school may authorise an examiners' board to vary the eligibility requirements and/or the number of subjects to be approved for supplementary assessment. Where a choice is to be made, the examiners' board will decide those subjects for which supplementary assessment is to be approved. Priority will be given to lower level subjects followed by subjects which are prerequisites. The result for satisfactory completion of supplementary work will be registered as 50 per cent P.

Supplementary assessment may be a formal examination conducted under examination conditions or completion of extensive work performed over a nominated period of time together with an oral and/or written test. The extensive work will involve not less than twenty-five hours of private work relevant to the subject. The work must be of a high standard.
