5 points * 26 lecture hours, 26 laboratory/tutorial hours * Second semester * Caulfield/Peninsula * Prerequisites: TEC2441

Impact of the computer on society. Electronic construction techniques: packages, printed circuit boards, soldering, wiring, testing, fault finding. The process control computer and its peripherals. A-D and D-A converters. Signed number arithmetic. Interfaces and communications: basic communication concepts, concept of a protocol, serial and parallel interfaces with examples. Fundamentals of microcomputers and introduction to assembly language programming, architecture, memory (RAM, ROM, disks, disk sectoring etc), instruction sets, register operations, address modes, interrupts.

Assessment

Examinations (3 hours): 80% * Practical work/Laboratory work: 20%
