Q Le

4 points * 26 lecture hours, 13 tutorial hours * Second semester * Caulfield/Peninsula

Introduction to force concepts: force in static systems, mass, weight, load force, acceleration. Dynamic loading, acceleration in straight line and curves, impact, centrifugal forces. Properties of areas and solids, density, volume, specific gravity, centre of mass. Equilibrium of static force systems: two-dimensional force systems, forces acting through a single point. Non-concurrent planar forces, moments of a force, couples, free body diagrams. Stability of solid objects. Overturning and restoring moments, centre of rotation. Resistance to sliding. Structural systems: effect of force on structural members, tension, compression, bending, shear, torsion, bearing. Examples of force systems. Force evaluation systems such as the bicycle, furniture, playground equipment. Case studies. Computers in analysis and design. Overview of the role.
