Physics II

4 points * 26 lectures, 26 laboratory/problem class hours * First/Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: VCE Physics or PHS1800

This subject comprises three units. The treatment uses calculus and vectors. Electricity unit: electric charge and field, dipoles, Gauss' Law, electric potential, capacitance, stored energy, dielectrics, polarisation and electric flux density D, theory of conduction in metals. Magnetism unit: magnetic flux density B, force on charges and currents, torque on a loop, Ampere's and Biot-Savart Law, magnetic field H; Induction, Faraday's Law, electric generators, counter-emf, eddy currents; mutual and self-inductance, stored energy. Modern physics unit: photons, photoelectric and Compton effects. X-rays. Particle waves and quantum effects. The nucleus, radioactive decay, nuclear reactions, detection of radiation. Laboratory work related to these topics.
