Physics I
4 points * 26 lectures, 26 laboratory/problem class hours * First/Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: VCE Physics or PHS1800
This subject comprises two units. The treatment uses calculus and vectors. Mechanics unit: forces and Newton's Laws of motion, friction; work, energy, potential energy and equilibrium; momentum and collisions; moment of inertia, rotational dynamics; fluid statics, fluid flow, Bernoulli's equation. Wave-optics unit: simple harmonic, damped and forced oscillations; waves and their mathematical description; reflection, energy and intensity; the Doppler effect; electromagnetic waves, refraction; geometric optics for curved mirrors and lenses; interference and diffraction. Laboratory work related to these topics.
