Electrical and magnetic materials

4 points * 2 lectures per week plus tutorials * First semester * Clayton * Corequisites: MTE3502

Electrical conductivity and semiconductivity: free electron and band theory. Intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, transistor and integrated circuit manufacture, optoelectric devices. Dielectrics: harmonic and Debye models of polarisation and loss, optical fibres, dielectric breakdown. Ferro electrics, piezoelectricity. Magnetic behaviour, domain wall motion and pinning, single domain particles. Hard and soft magnetic materials.
