Structure of engineering materials II

Phase diagrams and microstructure: interpretation of phase diagrams, the lever rule; equilibrium and non-equilibrium solidification in metals and alloys, segregation; crystal growth, growth instability; constitutional supercooling; cellular and dendritic solidification; eutectic solidification; solid-state phase transformations, the iron-carbon phase diagram, microstructures of steels and cast irons; selected examples of microstructures in other metal and ceramic systems. Optical microscopy: light microscopy, illumination, lens systems, reflection and transmission; magnification and resolution; defects of optical systems; polarised light microscopy, birefringence; interference and phase contrast methods. Scanning electron microscopy and microanalysis: interactions of high energy electron beams with solids; electron optics; operation of scanning electron microscope; image interpretation in SEM; energy dispersive spectroscopy; quantitative microanalysis. Transmission electron microscopy.
