Manufacturing organisations of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries will operate in rapidly changing and competitive environments. Development of strategies appropriate to this scenario will be covered through providing focus on the environment facing manufacturing industry internationally and in Australia; development of business missions for manufacturing and identifying a sustainable competitive advantage for the organisation; the strategic business planning process; organisational arrangements necessary for strategy development; iterative development of manufacturing strategies involving strategies for marketing, design, and product/process development, human resource development, innovation and technology and finance.
