Types of materials: metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Structure and properties of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Engineering materials. Metals: ferrous alloys; carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steels, tool steels. White cast irons, gray cast irons, ductile irons, alloy cast irons. Non-ferrous alloys: copper, aluminium, titanium and other non-ferrous alloys of engineering importance. Ceramics: crystalline and non-crystalline materials, glass ceramics. Polymers: structure, thermoplastics, thermosets, additives. Composites: man-made fibre-reinforced composites, natural fibre-reinforced composites, aggregate composites.

Assessment

Written (1000 words): 30% * Examinations (2 hours): 70%
