Mechanics of solids

Analysis of stress and strain. Equations of equilibrium and compatibility in two and three dimensions, stress distribution in beams, compound thick cylinders, rotating discs, experimental techniques (strain gauges). Introduction to plasticity, plastic bending. Plastic deformation of thick cylinders. Introduction to matrix structural analysis and the finite element techniques of stress analysis. Introduction to fracture mechanics.

Assessment

Examinations (3 hours): 70% * Practical work/Laboratory work: 30%
