Manufacturing processes

4 points * 39 lecture hours, 13 laboratory hours * Second semester plus workshop experience which may be scheduled during non-teaching periods * Caulfield

Casting processes. Cold working and hot working of metal. Powder metallurgy compacting and sintering and applications. Welding and applied processes - welding metallurgy, heat affected zone, weld cracking. Surface finishing - electroplating principles, electro machining, hot dipping, anodising processes, decorative coating. Machining processes - drilling, turning, boring, milling and broaching, CNC machining, cutting tools, cylindrical and surface griding drilling reaming and tapping. Metrology surface texture measurement. The relevance of the scale of production and the economics of alternative processes. Workshop experience. Safety in the workshop, metal cutting processes, introduction to workshop machinery, CNC lathes, CNC mill, fitting and turning, welding processes.

Assessment

Examinations (3 hours): 70% * Practical work, laboratory work and test: 30%
