4 points * 39 lecture hours, 8 laboratory hours, 5 tutorial hours * First semester * Caulfield * Prerequisites: ENC1301

Normal and shear stresses in beams. Determination of slopes and deflection of beams. Instability of slender columns subjected to compressive loads. Eccentrically loaded columns. Use of standards for column design. Determination of angle of twist and shear stresses in solid and hollow shafts. Principal stresses and maximum shear stresses in shafts and beams s sub-stresses and maximum shear stresses in shafts and beams subjected to axial loads, bending moments and torsion. Theories of static failure; maximum principal stress, maximum shear stress, distortion energy application to various situations to predict the onset of yield. Stress concentration factors. Fatigue failures and their features, testing, S-N curves, endurance limit, A-M curves, modified Goodman diagram. Effect of stress concentration, notch sensitivity, size and temperature. Cumulative fatigue damage, Miner's rule. Fatigue with combined loading.
