Machine design using stock machine elements and components (bearings, flexible couplings, gears, splines, belt and chain drives). Engineering drawing: surface texture symbols, tolerancing, standard components. Functional and spatial design through the use of layouts and assembly drawings. The design cycle of a product from the initial need through its design, manufacture, use and disposal; introduction to creative design. Influence of manufacturing processes on design. Force analysis, mathematical models, selection of materials and working stress, shock loads. Analysis and design of components, eg beams, shafts, keys, bolted and welded joints with central and eccentric loading. Design to resist fatigue failure, Goodman diagram, application to components such as shafts and preloaded bolted joints.
