IND3322

Design for production 2

D Kennedy

4 points * 4 hours per week * 26 lecture hours, 26 tutorial/laboratory hours * Second semester * Caulfield * Prerequisites: IND3321

This subject is a wide ranging culmination of the mechanical design aspects of the industrial engineering course and develops students' understanding of the fundamental design problem: how products may be made cheaper or with better quality by redesign. Redesign involves determining whether the product is still going to function correctly and whether it can be manufactured profitably. Each week there will be lectures on the general framework of value engineering, concurrent engineering, design, manufacturing, marketing and economics. The tutorials will be used for a project-based assignment when small groups of students will be provided with a manufactured component which they will study, propose design changes, assess the changes for feasibility and function and complete by preparing an economic justification for carrying out the change and presenting to the company management.

Assessment

Examination (2 hours): 40% * Assignment and presentations: 60%
