Structures section: introduction, normal stress and strain, stress-strain diagram, elasticity and plasticity, Hook's law, shear stress and strain, allowable stresses and allowable loads; displacement of axially loaded members; torsion of circular bars, non-uniform torsion; types of beams; shear force and bending moment relationships between load, shear force and bending moment, shear force and bending moment diagrams; normal strains in beams, normal stresses in web of beams with flanges; Mohr's circle for plane stress; differential equations of the deflection curve; buckling and stability, columns with pinned ends, columns with other support conditions, elastic and inelastic column behaviour. Machines section: plate clutches, cone clutches and centrifugal clutches; belt drivers and band brakes - flat belt drives, V-belt drive, effect of centrifugal tension and initial tensions on belt drives; gear trains - simple gear trains, compound gear trains, epicyclic trains, cams and cam followers - design of cams profile for specified followers, displacement trajectory.

Assessment

Examinations (two papers, 30% each): 60% * Two assignments (20% each): 40%
