A study of the concepts of system control and the application of feedback to improve system operation. Students will also consider the nature of the response of basic systems due to the presence of delay, inertia, damping, negative and positive feedback, proportional and rate control. Topics to be covered will include basic control terminology; control hardware, mathematical modelling, feedback; time response of closed loop systems; positive feedback; steady-state response; some simple nonlinearities; control elements; digital computers in control.
