Atomic structure and interatomic bonding; the structure of crystalline solids; imperfection in solids; solid-state diffusion; mechanical properties of metals; dislocations and strengthening mechanisms; the four basic mechanisms of fracture; phase diagrams (or equilibrium diagrams); non equilibrium phase transformations; the iron-iron carbide system; non ferrous alloys. Comprehensive study guides will be provided, supplemented by a reader containing relevant material. Tutorial assistance and practical classes will be provided at weekend schools.

Assessment

Examination (3 hours): 50% * Practical Reports and assignments: 50%
