3 points * First semester * Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week * Gippsland/Distance * Prerequisites: An appropriate Year 12 Mathematics or GAS1601

This subject is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of linear algebra - matrices, determinants, vectors and simultaneous linear systems, emphasising their interrelationships and applications to engineering and the sciences. Topics covered include fundamental matrix operations; homogeneous linear transformations; determinants; inverse of a matrix; vectors in three dimensions - scalar and vector products and simple applications; linear dependence of vectors; linear systems of equations; eigenvalues and eigenvectors; diagonalisation of matrices; simple applications to population growth models and electrical and mechanical systems. For on-campus students, the tutorial program is designed to enhance understanding of material presented in lectures and study guides.
