Physical science for engineers

6 points * First semester * 3 hours of lectures per week, 2 hours of tutorialsand 2 hours of practical work per fortnight * Gippsland/Distance * Prerequisites: Entry to the engineering course

This subject is designed to provide basic studies in physics for engineering students and incorporates studies in electromagnetic field theory; an introduction to quantum theory and atomic/nuclear structure; thermal and electrical properties of materials; real gases; a study of electrical conduction in gaseous, liquid and solid states; wave theory. Detailed study guides are provided with a number of assignments and practical problems. Tutorial and practical classes take place on a regular time-tabled basis for internal students. Laboratory exercises are designed to achieve two objectives: (i) to demonstrate and reinforce theory material; and (ii) to develop an appreciation of measurement skills and methods of analysis.

Assessment

End-of-semester examination: 80% * Laboratory work (reports): 20% * Students must pass both theory and laboratory sections
