Engineering material science 1

4 points * 26 lecture hours, 26 laboratory/tutorial hours * First semester * Caulfield

Structure of matter, the periodic table, primary and secondary and bonding. Metallic grain structure, solidification, solid solutions, polymer timber and ceramic structure. Polymerisation concepts, degradation and flammability, electromechanical attack of metals. Properties of materials, introduction to iron-carbon phase diagram and simple heat treatments of steel, cast irons, welds. Mechanical properties and material property graphs. Elastic and plastic deformation. Use of standards. Influence of defects, environment and strain rate on failure mechanisms. Structure - property relationships of anisotrophic materials - namely timber. Effects of water content on mechanical properties and dimensions of hydrophilic materials, conductors, semi conductors, insulators, ferro electrics.

Assessment

Laboratory and tutorial work: 30% * Examinations (3 hours): 70%
