Network planning and management: terminology, classification, planning and management, performance statistics, system utilisation. Protocols and local area networks: the principles of protocols, the model for open systems inter-connection, arq systems, information theory and entropy, error correcting codes. Cryptography and security: entrance keys and passwords, hardware and software precautions, cyphering techniques. Computer communication hardware: modems, multiplexors, concentrators, front end processors. Buses and interfaces - IEEE488, RS232, IEEE488C, RS422 and 449. Cables for interconnection - twisted pair, coaxial, fibre optic.
