Industrial power control 2

R Lisner

6 points * 26 lecture hours, 26 laboratory hours * Second semester * Caulfield * Prerequisites: ELE5251

AC machine control: soft-starting, variable frequency AC drives, slip-recovery drives. DC machine control: mains fed, DC variable speed drives, chopper control of DC machines, four-quadrant converters, regeneration, brushless DC motors and control. Harmonics and interference: generation of harmonics into mains and load, techniques for harmonic suppression. Radio frequency interference generation, prevention and supppression. Power factor implications. Machine considerations: selection of AC machine/drive combinations, special characteristics of machines for use with power semiconductor converters, load characteristics, effects of duty cycle, dynamic and regenerative braking, effects of harmonics in machines. Other solid-state power control topics: large-scale battery charging systems, standby inverters for emergency power, uninterruptible power supplies, effects of using solid-state power converters with standby alternator sets.

Assessment

Examinations (3 hours): 60% * Practical work/Laboratory work: 40%
