Industrial power control

Power semiconductor devices: SCRs, GTOs, power block transistors, power MOSFETS, theory and application. Power converter theory: phase-controlled rectification and inversion, forced-commutated inverters and choppers, high frequency switch-mode power converters, cycloconverters. Control circuitry: circuitry for producing the required timing and control for various power converter configurations. Power semiconductor device protection: protection of power semiconductor devices from transient overvoltage conditions. Overcurrent protection for different power semiconductor device types. Other aspects including dv/dt, di/dt, safe-operating area.

Assessment

Examinations: 60% * Practical work/Laboratory work: 40%
