Amplifier fundamentals: concept of small-signal and large-signal amplifiers. Frequency response of wideband amplifiers, gain, bandwidth, Bode plots, -3 dB breakpoints. Transient response. Small-signal amplifiers: amplifer fundamentals notation, amplifer configurations. Biasing, thermal stability, stabilisation of bias point. Small-signal BJT and FET equivalent circuits: two-port parameters, hybrid-pi model, parameter variations. Frequency response. Use of computer simulation packages. Integrated circuits: construction, technology and processes. Linear devices: ideal operational amplifers, characteristics and applications.

Assessment

Examinations (3 hours): 80% * Practical work/Laboratory work: 20%
