High voltage systems

Protection zones in power systems. Differential, distance and pilot wire protection. Physics of circuit interruption. Circuit breakers. Current chopping and restriking voltages. Underground cables. Transmission line phenomena. Calculation of surge performance. Lightning phenomena and its affect on a power system. High voltage measurement and testing. Insulation coordination. Partial discharges. Ageing of insulation.

Assessment

Examinations (2 hours): 70% * Laboratory work: 30%
