Mobile systems and network design

3 points * 16 lectures, 9 tutorial/laboratory hours * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: ECS3321 (Electromagnetic theory II), MAT3920 (Statistical methods) * Corequisites: ECS4322 (Mobile radio, microwave systems and antennas)

Land and satellite-based mobile radio services, systems and networks. Mobile cellular telephone, paging, telepoint, and wireless LAN systems. Characteristics of the mobile radio channel; multipath fading, shadowing and Doppler effects. Modulation, coding and diversity to combat these adverse effects. Switching and other protocols in support of mobility. Frequency reuse and channel allocation. Multiaccess methods. Study of cellular mobile radio as the `typical' mobile service. Future developments in mobile telecommunications and associated new design problems.

Assessment

Examinations (2 hours): 70% * Practical work/Laboratory work: 30%
