ECS3391

Electrical design

W J Bonwick

3 points * 36 lectures and practical hours * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: ECS3351 (Electrical power II) and ECS3361 (Small-signal amplifiers) *

Part 1 (electrical): basis of design - equations, variables, optimisation, availability of data; heat transfer processes, thermal capacity, heat sinks; inductor and transformer design - issues, equations and variables, shape, temperature rise, computer-aided iteration. Part 2 (electronic): understanding specifications, interpreting manufacturer's data; design concepts, constraints and compromise; practical aspects - PC board design and design tools, component specification, component mounting practice; `interference' control - grounding practice, signal ground, powerground; power supply decoupling; shielding and guarding.
