Electrical power I

4 points * 26 lectures, 11 tutorials, 15 laboratory hours * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: ECS2310 (Circuit theory I) and ECS2320 (Electromagnetic theory I)

Polyphase systems: three-phase connections, complex power, per-unit quantities. Transformers: ideal, single-phase, three-phase. Introduction to power electronics, converters, power switches, drive systems. Three-phase induction motors: rotating magnetic field, steady-state performance. Single phase induction motors. Introduction to electrical supply: distribution issues, quality of supply, basis of protection.

Assessment

Examinations (2 hours): 80% * Laboratory work: 20%
