Retaining wall performance requirements, loading conditions, support mechanisms, failure modes and design procedures. Gravity walls, sheet piling, trench support and ground anchors. Mechanisms and environment of slope instability, factors of safety and probability of failure, analytical procedures, sliding wedge, slip circle and method of slices analyses, ground water and surface water effects, dam stability. Site investigation, available data search, surface traverses, subsurface exploration methods, types of sample, recovery and storage, in-situ testing, geophysical exploration methods, rock drilling and core logging, discontinuity survey techniques. Remote sensing: spectral and geometrical factors, stereoscopy, satellite imagery, interpretation. Data analysis: maps, sections, stereographic and equal area projections. Rock slope stability: types of rock slope failure, statics, stereographic and probabilistic methods of analysis. Rock slope stabilisation: rock bolts and anchors, groundwater control, monitoring techniques.

Assessment

Written (4000 words): 20% * Examinations (3 hours): 80%
