Timber and masonry structures

Properties and grading of timber. Design of timber beams:e of moisture content, size, slenderness, etc; deflection calculations. Design of timber columns; slenderness; combined axial force and bending. Tension members. Connections in timber. Laminated timber. Properties of masonry. Structural design and detailing of masonry systems. Design of walls, including effects of slenderness and eccentricities; local effects of concentrated loads; interaction of walls with supporting beams; lateral loads on panels spanning one way and two ways; strength in shear. Effects of fire and accidental loads.

Assessment

Examinations (3 hours): 80% * Practical work: 20%
