4 points * 26 lectures, 12 tutorials, 4 laboratory classes * First and second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: CIV1210.04

Review of equilibrium principles for analysis of statically determinate beams and trusses. Normal and shear stress. Stress and strain at a point. Mohr's circle. Use of strain gauges. Hooke's Law and the theory of elasticity. Plane stress and plane strain. Superposition. St. Venant principle. Failure theories based on yield. The six structural actions on a bar. Stresses in member cross-section due to axial, shear and flexural actions. Torsion of circular shafts. Deflection of beams by moment area method. Analysis of simple statically indeterminate structures by the flexibility method and by the stiffness (slope deflection) and moment distribution methods. Sway of rectangular frames. Buckling of columns with initial imperfections.
