Chemistry I

4 points * 4 hours per week * First/Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: VCE Chemistry or CHM1700

This course is designed to provide a background to those areas of chemistry that will be useful during studies and later professional work in engineering. The course emphasises the following areas: thermochemistry, combustion, energy changes, solutions, concentration units, colligative properties, phase changes, chemical reactions and equilibria, acid-base equilibria, ionic equilibria, electrochemistry, batteries and fuel cells, corrosion, solid structures (close packed and structures of silicates and ceramics) and a brief treatment of organic structures and polymers.

Assessment

Examinations (2.5 hours): 80% * Laboratory work: 20%
