Objectives The student is expected to acquire additional knowledge and understanding of thermodynamics and its applications to practical systems: vapour-liquid behaviour in real solutions; chemically reacting systems; ionic solutions; electrochemical processes.
Synopsis Phase equilibria: vapour-liquid equilibria in single component, binary and multi-component systems, partially miscible systems, immiscible systems, steam distillation. Chemical equilibria: phase rule as applied to chemically reacting systems, simultaneous reactions. Ionic solution behaviour: ionisation, ion chemical potential, ionic solution models, solubility, dissociation, variation of reaction equilibrium constant with temperature. Electrochemical processes: Pourbaix diagrams, application to leaching, precipitation and corrosion, corrosion kinetics, polarisation diagrams, Tafel plots, overpotential, Butler-Volmer equation.
