Process control

4 points * 29 lectures, 10 tutorials * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: MAT2920, CHE2110

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of process control.

Synopsis Process dynamics in terms of deviation variables: linearising the basic model equations. Laplace transform methods and transfer functions. Characteristic dynamics of selected basic systems. The pervasiveness of the negative feedback loop in control. Regulatory and servo operation; continuous flow and batch processing. Control loop elements at the disposal of the control engineer. Hardware descriptions of current transducers and final control elements relevant to process control. The possibilty of instability and criteria for detecting system proximity to this condition. Controller tuning - time domain and frequency domain techniques for single-input single-output (SISO) systems. State space representation of complex systems - concepts of controllability and observabilty. A qualitative preview of complex control schemes.
