Introduction to chemical processing systems

4 points * 26 lectures, 22 tutorials, 4 laboratory classes * First/Second semester * Clayton

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of the general balance equation and its application to mass, energy and linear momentum; the analysis and design of simple chemical reactors; the concepts of viscosity, dimensional analysis and conductive and convective heat transfer; some types of simple heat exchange equipment. Practicals will introduce the student to simple laboratory equipment and instrumentation related to chemical engineering.

Synopsis Descriptions of major operations from important chemical processes. Development of simple mathematical models of selected operations involving mass and energy balances, heat and momentum transfer and chemical reaction. Use of models for simulation and design of operations and simple processes.

Assessment

Examinations: 94% * Laboratory: 6%
