The Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) is a two-year part-time distance education course offered to applicants with an approved degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised tertiary institution. Entry is competitive and places may be restricted to quotas.
Course structure
The course for 1995 consists of the four subjects as set out below. Each of these subjects has a subject credit value of 2.0. As well as completing the four subjects students must successfully complete forty-five days of supervised school experience. This requirement forms an essential part of subjects GEC5501 and GEC5502 and must be completed in both first and second years of the course. Teaching method subjects offered in 1995 include English, social studies, creative arts, science, mathematics and business studies.
Students must take two single teaching methods (eg `English' and `Social studies'; `Mathematics' and `Social studies'; `Mathematics' and `Science') or one double method (eg double `Creative arts'; double `Business studies'). Students require a major or a submajor as a prerequisite for studying a teaching method area.

Students receive study materials for the various modules of the course. In each year of the course, practice teaching is undertaken in schools located close to a student's place of residence. Practice teaching is an integral part of GEC5501 (Teaching and curriculum studies I) and GEC5502 (Teaching and curriculum studies II). In the first year of the course twenty days of practice teaching are required, and in the second year of the course twenty-five days are compulsory. Practice teaching is usually undertaken during August and September in each year.
