Graduate Diploma in Second Language Education

The faculty offers a specialist Graduate Diploma in Second Language Education (GradDipSLE). Candidates for the graduate diploma will usually hold a university degree or its equivalent and be trained teachers of a language other than English, or hold a Graduate Diploma in Education in another field and qualifications in a LOTE and wish to upgrade their qualifications to be eligible for a teaching position in their LOTE. In this latter case, teachers wishing to work in government schools will need to undertake a supervised practicum of at least twenty-two days in the relevant LOTE. The course for the graduate diploma is designed to accommodate teachers at all levels seeking to improve their professional competence, to deepen their understanding of the processes of second language learning and teaching, and to widen their qualifications.

The graduate diploma may be taken either by full-time study in one academic year or by part-time study in not more than three years. An academic year comprises two semesters and each subject is of one semester length. Classes are held in the late afternoon. Subjects are currently as follows:

Compulsory subjects

* GED3833 Theory and practice of second language education

and

* GED3812 Educational applications of second language acquisition research

or

* GED3815 Practical applications of research in second language education

Electives

* GED3830 Language teaching syllabus design

For the award of the graduate diploma a candidate must satisfactorily complete four subjects, including GED3833 and GED3812 or GED3815. For one of the subjects a candidate may substitute a subject offered at an appropriate level by the Centre for European Studies or any language department entailing the upgrading of practical language competence. Students must have their program approved by the course coordinator before enrolment.

The attention of persons qualified for entry to MEdSt candidature is drawn to the opportunity they have of completing a masters degree with special reference to second language education. (See under Degree of Master of Educational Studies). Students should also note that graduate diploma subjects are taught at masters level and any student wishing to transfer from the graduate diploma to the masters must have completed at least two subjects at credit level or above and seek approval of the course coordinator.

Application forms for admission to the graduate diploma are available from the inquiry office, School of Graduate Studies.
