Research on teaching

Not offered in 1995

Full-year subject * Clayton

The class will meet fortnightly throughout first and second semesters, but the subject will be equivalent to a one-semester subject only. Students will be formally enrolled in second semester. The purpose of this subject is to introduce students to a range of methods for conducting research on teaching. It is intended for experienced teachers who are interested in making a contribution to professional knowledge about teaching and is based on the assumption that, given appropriate resources, practising teachers are in an excellent position to make a significant contribution to the knowledge base of teaching. A range of methods will be explored, such as action research, case studies, and journal writing. The principal basis for assessment will be a small-scale research project. It is hoped that the outcomes of the subject will be useful in pre- and in-service teacher education and that they will find their way into professional journals and magazines. We will also explore their potential for inclusion in portfolios of work which might be used for evaluating teachers for advanced skills teacher status.

Assessment

Written: 80% * Seminar participation: 20%
