Research in mathematics education
Dr D C Blane and Professor A J Bishop
Second semester * Clayton
This subject will provide opportunities for students to explore issues and recent research in mathematics education in some depth. These will include curriculum designs and theories, the implications of psychological research and other recent investigations in mathematics education. The subject will have an international perspective but will also look particularly at recent research in Australia, with a consideration of the implications of both for the teaching of mathematics in the classroom at all levels. Students will be encouraged to pursue a particular research interest as well as working cooperatively with the group on topics of current interest. Wherever possible the subject will have a practical bias as well as evaluating previous research and investigations, and students will be encouraged and given the opportunity to develop skills and explore topics which may be used later in the project component.
