Reading: theory, research and practice

This subject will examine key theory, research and practice in the teaching of reading. Students will consider the nature of reading as a social practice and the sociocultural contexts which determine the nature of reading acquisition and development. Students will examine different research studies and theories of reading acquisition and explore the ways in which reading is taught and learnt for learners of all ages. Different approaches to the assessment of reading abilities will be examined, together with strategies to support the continuing development of readers. Issues relating to the politics of reading will be considered. As part of the course, students will undertake an action research or investigative project in which they apply and evaluate some aspect of reading research or theory in a practical setting.
