This subject is designed to introduce students to some of the most important issues in the development of Australian education and public health etc. It will cover the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and such issues as the establishment of private schooling in Australia, the development of government schooling, the struggles which surrounded the increasing power of centralised authorities, the state aid debate, developments in teacher and nurse training and public sector unionism. Special attention will be given to studying the effect that social, political and economic forces had on education and public health during this period.
